Sardars Only On Stage
I have to honestly say that, despite the fact nothing really surprises me anymore, I was a bit saddened to see this picture (circulated on Facebook). These are probably three of the more famous dastaar (turban) wearing Punjabi singers on the scene, Inderjeet Nikku, Ravinder Grewal and Diljit Dosanjh. The sad thing is that, just like Lada Gaga, these guys put on an act. They tie a wicked dastaar, sing a few Sardar and Sikhi-related songs (click their names to view their most famous songs), and have become darlings of the diaspora. Too bad they choose not to dress the part in real life.
This reminds me of an old quote, "If I have to tell you I'm a gentleman, then I'm probably not". If you have to tell or sing to people that you're a Sardar, you're probably not.

Its surprising for me too. I've ne'er thought of this. I used to love these three singers but not after this. No one is forcing them to wear a turban, if they don't want to. But at least, they should not cheat public. I've relatives n friends who just love them just because they wear turban. These kind of people support the young generation to not wear turban. They just pissed me off.
They may put on the act (a very poor one too - none of them have a beard) but most Sikhs buy the act. It works in Bollywood too. And, in Sikh weddings.
These guys are to Sikhism what cookies are to nutrition: empty calories that only hurt us in the long run.
Shocked to see their reality.
They are not SARDARS on stage either(all are without beards).Sardari is in Rehet.
Siraf kehen ke ya gaane ga ke koi
sardar nahi ho janda.
Seriously, if you look to Bhangra/Punjabi music for Sikhi-related inspiration, then you have bigger problems. Lets not look to the entertainment industry - dastaar wearing or not - to be role models.
You must also consider the fact that these lads and others like Shinda have also embraced the pagg and by doing so, have injected dastar pride into many listeners.
Whether or not they grow their hair, is their business and who are we to judge them for it? That is God's job.
